General Description
The Neptune 2500 is the
replacement for the previous model
Neptune 2000. It has two hotplate burners, a separate grill, a
thermostatically-controlled oven and
a battery-powered electronic ignition
system on all burners. The cooker
has a stainless steel exterior while the
central chassis is made from
enamelled coated steel.
Effectiveness and functionality
The deep spillage tray will catch
the contents from a boiled over
saucepan. The grill burner runs front
to back and produces fairly good
toast provided you turn it half way
through cooking. The oven is small
with a powerful burner that heats up
quickly and has a thermostat to
maintain the temperature. The pan
clamps and fiddles are functional and
effective and they form part of the
Sea Rail system that includes the
gimbal mounting pivot. The pivot on
the standard system (A) will not retain
the cooker should the boat completely
invert, although the deluxe Sea Rail will.
Cleaning
The spillage tray is easy to get at
after removing the pan support and is
easy to wipe clean. In general there
are few places for dirt and grease to
collect, apart from the screw heads
and pan support retaining nuts (B).
The control knobs (C) can be removed
for cleaning, but the screen-printed
markings on the facia can be rubbed
off with over-vigorous cleaning.
Installation
It’s the same size as its
predecessors so can be replaced
with little or no alteration to the
mounting points.
Servicing
The cooker is held together by
nuts and screws so is easy to take
apart. This makes replacing thermocouples, burners and valves
fairly straightforward. The common
parts to fail will be thermocouples
and the grill burner. These can be
replaced by just removing the front
facia-panel and loosening the spillage
tray nuts. Replacing the oven
thermocouple will mean removing
one of the side panels.
The Verdict
This is the most commonly sold replacement cooker in the UK. It is an entry
level cooker with good features and performance. The build price does not
allow for higher quality materials to be used in its construction, so the chassis
may not last forever. But at £530 you could afford two replacement cookers for
the price of one of the top models.
