Spinflo, who produce a wide range of LPG cooking appliances for the leisure market, manufactures the Nelson cooker in Sheffield. The Spinflo Nelson is made as a replacement marine cooker to fit in the as space as the Flavel Vanessa that was a popular cooker fitted in many boats in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s.
The Spinflo Nelson is solidly constructed primarily of Stainless Steel including the inside of the oven. It is manufactured to meet the requirements of BSEN30 and is designed for use in a marine environment. All the burners have Flame Supervision Devices fitted to meet the EN ISO 10239:2000 standards. The Spinflo Nelson also comes complete with a gimbal system for fitting in sea going vessels.
The Spinflo Nelson has two 1.5kw hotplate burners that will boil 500ml kettle of water in about 4 minutes. The spillage tray around the hotplate burners has deep recesses to catch those bad spills. A fiddle and Pan clamp system is also provided and will hold pans up to 230mm in diameter in place.
The grill has a 1.5kw burner and will evenly brown a piece of white sliced bread in about 3 minutes. The grill pan will hold two pieces of sliced bread and has a small fiddle arrangement to hold the grill pan in place.
The thermostatically controlled oven has a 1.5kw burner that will reach gas mark 8 (200oC) in less than 6 minutes. The oven has a 33litre capacity and there are three shelf positions and one oven shelf, additional ones are available from the marineshop. It has a smoked brown glass door closes with the aid of a powerful spring and is held shut by a wire latch arrangement.
In independent tests carried out by two popular sailing magazines the Spinflo Nelson scored very well.
“A relatively inexpensive cooker, by marine standards, the Nelson was far more popular than the final vote suggested”
Practical Boat Owner 422, February 2003.
“The Nelson isn’t the slickest looking of cookers, nor is it the biggest, cheapest, or most expensive. If you’re looking for the fastest way to boil water look elsewhere. But, as a good, well made all rounder, with few vices and a lot of virtues, no other comes close.”
Tim Bartlett, Sailing Today, April 2004.
