Notice to comply with: Code of practice for commercial vessels up to 24 metres. S.G.O. (1993) Annex 3, paragraph 7.1
SHOULD YOUR GAS ALARM "SOUND OFF" ON YOUR BOAT
1) DON'T PANIC!
Gas alarms are designed to operate well the gas' lower limit of flammability.
2) DO NOT SMOKE.
3) NAKED LIGHTS SHOULD NEVER BE USED AS A MEANS OF LOCATING GAS LEAKS.
4) DO NOT operate electrical appliances.
5) SWITCH OFF ALL ENGINES.
6) TURN OFF all gas appliances.
7) TURN OFF all gas cylinders.
8) If safe to do so OPEN ALL HATCHES, DOORS, WINDOWS, to allow the air to disperse the gas.
9) PUMP OUT THE BILGE with a manual bilge pump (Non Electrical) and continue to pump when the bilge is dry. Any accumulated gas will be pumped over board.
REMEMBER!
The gas you are using is heavier than air so this could take some time.
10) Re-try the gas alarm from time to time until it ceases to "sound off".
ONCE THIS HAPPENS
11) Do not re-use your gas system until it has been inspected and tested for gas escapes by a "competent" gas engineer.
