Automatic Changeover Valve |
A device found in multi-cylinder installations. It allows the cylinder supply to change over from the supply cylinder(s) when empty to the reserve without any interruption in the gas flow.

Balance flue |

Bulkhead fitting |
An elongated compression fitting, which will allow pipe, to run through a bulkhead.

Butane |
A light hydrocarbon gaseous at normal room temperature but can be liquefied under moderate pressure. Has a boiling point of about 2oC. Sold by Calor Gas Ltd in Blue cylinders

Calor Gas |
A brand name for Butane and Propane

Camping Gaz |
A trading company who sell butane in light blue cylinders.
|
Cartridge |
Portable and disposable vessel of approved design used to contain LPG under pressure.

Catalytic |
A quartz fibre containing the platinum catalyst impregnates a catalytic panel. When neat gas passes through the panel, flameless combustion occurs. The reaction takes place at about around 400oC and the pilot initiates the reaction.

Compression fitting |
A pipe fitting used to join two or more sections of pipe together using an olive which is compressed between the body of the fitting and a compression nut to form a gas tight joint

Control Valve |
A device fitted to a gas appliance to control the flow of gas to a burner.

Cut Off valve |
A device to turn off the gas supply
|
Cylinder |
Portable and refillable vessel of approved design used to contain LPG under pressure.

FFD |
Flame Supervision Device, a device that prevents gas flowing to the burner if there is no flame
|
Fiddle |
A rail used to stop saucepans sliding off a cooker or hob
|
Fulham Nozzle |
A specially shaped metal fitting used to join flexible pipe to solid pipework
|
Gimbal |
A device used to allow an appliance to swing, to allow for the movement of the boat
|
Governor |

Heavy Ends |
An oily contaminate that can collect in the bottom of gas cylinders.

High Pressure stage |
Part of the installation between the outlet of the single stage pressure regulator

Low pressure stage |
Part of the installation between the outlet of the single stage pressure regulator and the inlet of the appliance.

Open Flued |
A Flue system which allows the air for combustion to be drawn from the cabin space and the flue then passes the combustion products to the outside air

Piezo igniter |
A press button ignition device which produces a extremely high voltage charge when two elements are struck together.

Pigtail hose |
A pre-made Flexible hoses that connect a gas cylinder to a Automatic Change over valve or wallblock
|
Pilot analyser |
A pilot flame that is specially calibrated to analyse the amount of Carbon Dioxide present in the atmosphere.

Propane |
A light hydrocarbon gaseous at normal room temperature but can be liquefied under moderate pressure. Has a boiling point of about -40oC. Sold by Calor Gas Ltd in Red cylinders.

Regulator |
A device for maintaining a constant gas outlet pressure at a level recommended for an appliance.
|
Room Sealed Appliance |
An appliance with a system in which incoming combustion air and outgoing combustion products pass through sealed ductwork connected to an enclosed combustion chamber and terminating outside the vessel.

Soundness testing |
Testing the gas system for leaks.
|
Stenching Agent |
A chemical (Ethyl Mercaptan) added to the LPG to make it smell.
|
Thermocouple |
A probe that consists of two dissimilar metals joined at the hot junction. When heated it produces a small electrical current that passes down the Centre of s co-axial conductor to an electro-magnetic valve located in the FFD.

Thermostat |
A device to regulate the gas flow to an oven burner to maintain the temperature at a constant level.

Unflued |
The air for combustion is drawn from the cabin space and then the combustion products pass back into the cabin space. Eg. Cooker
|
Wallblock |
A manifold to connect a regulator and a pigtail hose, usually has a mounting bracket.
